Common causes of hair loss
There are many ways you can get hair loss, and they may need to be tackled differently in order to be treated.
The most common cause of hair loss is with hereditary genes accompanied with aging. This genetic condition is called androgenic alopecia, or more commonly known as male or female -pattern baldness. If you have a family history of baldness, then chances are you will experience baldness this way.
Hormonal changes caused by different conditions can also be the root of baldness, though some of these are temporary. These conditions include pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and ceasing the use of birth control pills. Also, and in relation to the one above, certain sex hormones can trigger hereditary hair loss that can start as early as puberty.
Certain medical conditions are also known to trigger baldness. These conditions include thyroid disease, alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease that attacks the hair follicles), scalp infections like ringworm and a mental disorder known as Trichotillomania or “hair-pulling disorder” that involves irresistible urges to pull hair from different parts of the body. Also, some diseases like lupus that cause scarring can result in permanent hair loss due to said scarring.
As a side effect, hair loss can be experienced due to medications. These medications are the ones used to treat cancer, high blood pressure, arthritis, depression, heart problems, and gout. Radiation therapy can also cause the hair to never grow back to the way it was before.
For many people, a trigger for noticeable hair thinning or hair loss is after a physical or emotional shock like death of a loved one, extreme weight loss or a high fever. Although, this kind of condition is only temporary.
Being harsh on your hair can be the cause of loads of problems, including loss. Excessive hairstyling or hairstyle that tightly pulls on your hair follicles and can cause something known as traction alopecia. Hot-oil hair treatments, permanents, or certain hair products can also induce hair loss. In addition, having an unhealthy diet can cause thinning on the hair.
Difference between hair loss in men and women
Though many of the causes of hair loss are experienced by both men and women, they can still experience it in different ways.
Hormones related to testosterone (also called androgens), cause hair follicles to have a deficient growth phase, bringing about abnormally soft and thin hair shafts. These follicles are said to be ‘miniaturized’. Men’s hair loss is usually a gradual decline of hair thickness most often along the crown and frontal areas of the scalp plus a receding hairline and bald spots.
Other than genetics, women also have their own set of important factors on hair loss. Abnormal levels of androgens in the blood are a cause for androgenetic alopecia in a minority of women. Women’s symptoms are similar to men but are more concealed and are more spread out. In addition, women rarely lose all their hair.
Tips on how to prevent hair loss
While hair loss caused by genetics and aging is inevitable, there are still many ways you can prevent further damage on your hair.
Treat your Hair with Gentle Care
Avoid excessively using hairstyles that puts too much pressure on your hair follicles. If possible, limit the tightness of your hair when you do styles that use bands, braids, and barrettes. You can use a wide-toothed comb to minimize pulling your hair out, and avoid forcefully tugging your hair when combing, even more so when it’s wet.
Be Wary of your Hair Products and Hair Tools
Some products or beauty regimen may not be suited for you, they can even worsen your condition. In addition, limit the use of tools or treatments that can cause damage to your hair. These include hot rollers, curling irons, hair straighteners, hot-oil treatments, permanents, blow dryers, and bleaching agents. If you choose to style your hair with heated tools, do it when your hair is dry along with using the lowest setting possible.
Cut Bad Habits
If you ever find yourself in the bad habit of instinctively pulling, twisting, or harshly rubbing your hair, try to find a way to cut it out. You can also shift to a healthy diet that includes proteins, iron, vitamins, and minerals, this will not only help maintain healthy hair but a healthy body as well. If possible, try to protect your hair from direct sunlight or other sources of UV light.
You can always consult your doctor on medications and supplements that can cause hair loss. In addition, you can ask if you can go for drugs that prevent further hair loss. And if you ever see signs of hair thinning or excessive hair loss, consult your doctor as soon as you can. Early detection of problems can often prevent any further and more severe damage.
